  • Capture Failures w/FCP 4.5?

Posted by Robert Allan on June 5, 2007 at 3:04 am

I’m logging & capturing footage in my FCP 4.5 system. External FW800 scratch drive has over 100GB of free space. I’m getting “dropped frame” capture errors 19 out of 20 times from multiple DVCAM tapes. The only change between the last time I captured footage (without incident) and this time is that I upgraded to OS X Tiger 10.4 from 10.3 something in anticipation of purchasing the new FC Studio 2 this month.

Anyone encountered this or know what’s causing it? I need to resolve this before the client comes to edit on Friday…

    Many thanks…

I guess I should add some clarification: I’m on a Dual G5 with 4.5 GB of RAM. The errors don’t appear to be on the tape as the capture freezes in different places each time I get the “dropped frame” error. I’m capturing DVCAM via firewire. The timecode on the tape is drop frame. It seems to ultimately capture shorter clips after a few tries. Longer clips fail repeatedly to capture.

Like I said, this never was an issue before the OS upgrade. Could that be it, or am I missing something.

    Thanks…

[zrb123] “have you tried trashing your preferences”

I’m not sure how to do this…

Thanks, Russ. All went well working from the info on Ken Stone’s page. However, I now can’t get my system to operate my DSR 25 via firewire. I checked all the preferences I could find for DV device control, but it says that it’s unable to communicate with the VTR… and all my preferences have been trashed.

    Did I miss something?

    Thanks,

There have been many many reports that FCP 4.5 and OS 10.4.x don’t play well together because there is a huge change in how QuickTime operates between 10.3.9 and 10.4.

The two solutions are to revert back to OS 10.3.9 or to upgrade FCP tp 5.1.x or above. Since you’re already planning the upgrade to FCS 2, maybe it’s time to jump.

    Try this first, though.

It’s seems to be the answer to non-communicative DV devices, but it may not solve all your issues because of the mismatch.

    Thanks Debe!

I’ve restored the firewire VTR connectivity, but the log & capture issues remain. You’ve verified what I expected about FCP 4.5 and OS X 4.x. Short captures seem to work and that’s getting me thru today’s edit. I plan to upgrade to FCS 2 soon, but now I’ll need to do it sooner. Thanks for getting back to me on this!
