  • FCP CC with MXO first time session questions…

Posted by Bryan Roberts on June 4, 2007 at 6:06 am

Hey all – I have my first color correction session with FCP and the MXO with the built in FCP 5.1.4 filters coming up next week and I had a few questions – first off I’m running an MXO with a dual core g5 and a 2405 dell monitor – the project is an HD feature (DVCPRO HD 720PN) and they have no intention or interest in a film out but their main goal is to look good on a projector (so I guess that would be a DVD or digibeta?). So here are the questions:

    1) Obviously doing a film out is a whole different bag for CC but for all the rest: DVD, Digibeta, D5 – can I color correct with one setting in the MXO and expect it to look similar across all these formats (sans a film out)?

    2) Knowing that their main goal is for the feature to look great on a projector, is there something I should know about the color space of most projectors or do I just color correct like I would normally?

    3) The director is looking for some extremely stylized looks that I’ve already created temp versions that he’s happy with – they have blown highs, absolutely crushed blacks and desaturated colors in places, others have a gold City of God type look. Once I am happy with the looks through the MXO and my 2405 – I’m just going to nest the seq and throw on the broadcast filter set to “conservative”. Are these extreme looks going to cause any problems on any of the non-film formats that it will be presented on?

    4) Is it worth buying a spyder2 Pro to additionally setup my MXO and 2405 setup or would this have no positive change?

Thanks for everyone’s feedback and help!

[Bryan R] “1) Obviously doing a film out is a whole different bag for CC but for all the rest: DVD, Digibeta, D5 – can I color correct with one setting in the MXO and expect it to look similar across all these formats (sans a film out)?”

Not really. There are different color spaces. If you are going to output to a certain format, then you need to color correct for that. DVD, Digibeta…those are SD. You need to color in that space if you want it to look good in SD. D5…that will be in an HD color space.

[Bryan R] “2) Knowing that their main goal is for the feature to look great on a projector, is there something I should know about the color space of most projectors or do I just color correct like I would normally?”

Projectors vary greatly…but in my experience they all run brighter than CRTs and LCDs. The blacks are dark grey, and you can see more in the shadows. But, that depends on the projector. Just color correct the best that you can for the given color space. That is all you can do short of having the projector there and coloring SPECIFICALLY for it. Which would be kinda stupid anyway. Color for what you are outputting to. HD or SD.

[Bryan R] “I’m just going to nest the seq and throw on the broadcast filter set to “conservative”. Are these extreme looks going to cause any problems on any of the non-film formats that it will be presented on?”

WHy are you gonna throw the Broadcast Safe filter if you aren’t going to broadcast? That is pointless and unnecessary. Make it look as good as you can

[Bryan R] “4) Is it worth buying a spyder2 Pro to additionally setup my MXO and 2405 setup or would this have no positive change?”

No. With the new 2.0 drivers, that allow you to set up the monitor to bars…the Spyder 2 and the Eye 2 one software is unecessary. IMHO.

    Thanks Shane,

    1) So obviously to CC in an HD color space is just to CC in my native FCP 720p timeline but is the easiest way to CC in an SD color space to just copy my HD sequence into an SD timeline and let the MXO show me the difference when it pops out an SD signal to my 2405?

    2) Any idea if the bigger film festivals support HD tapes of any sort? Any support of HD images really yet or do they mostly do either a film print or DVD?

    3) I thought you would use the broadcast filter to make all the whites and blacks and colors “legal” so there would be no issues if the film were bought and distributed on DVD to the general public? Are televisions and projectors ok with displaying super nonlegal whites and oversaturated colors?

You are awesome, thanks as always. Do you drink beer and if so, what’s your favorite kind? I’m in Burbank and need to bring you a 12 pack…
