    this isn’t really a question directly related to FCP, but you seem to be the most knowledgeable group on this site, so here it goes…

    We do a lot of internal video productions, but we certainly don’t have a proper studio. We have been given a conference room in our building and it really isn’t that bad. We have pretty decent sound control, there is lots of room, and it has worked out pretty well so far. The biggest problem is lighting. Not so much lighting, but power. We have a set of Arri lights (1K, 650, 350, and 2 150s). We are getting close to pushing the limits in that room. We are buying more lights this week, but we are looking at LEDs because of the power issue. Does anyone have any recommendations? Will I run into problems using the LEDs with the Arris that we are currently using? Any advice would be appreciated.

    I recommend heavy duty extension cords from another circuit.

    I wouldn’t go for LED. Professional Led is expensive and you still need more Power. You have to solve the circuit problem. Also LED is still variing in terms of coulor. You are not getting a stable Coulor temperature with different lights.

    Nice light the kinoflos but you still need power and in terms of Studio production you need fresnel lenses, because kinoflos are soft and bouncing you can’t direct them properly. The kinoflo is best on location and short distance when you need a soft lighting in faces for example.

    Had a quick chat about this to a DP friend, and he also mentioned Kine-Flo as a solution. They need to warm up, like HMI’s, but are incredibly bright, and not harsh if used properly – the handheld one he has is incredible – bright enough to fill in daylight…

    Hi Ben,

    this sounds interesting: A handheld one? How is it connected to power? Because I’m looking for a quick nice light easy to setup, just to give a face a nice smooth finish.
    Do you know more about it?

    I shot with panelites recently. we used them for fill. they are really nice lights. we mixed them with kinos and hmi’s and the gaffer did a great job balancing them all. we were shooting with an XLH1 hdv 30i. the footage was really quite nice. it was finished in FCP captured as uncompressed 10bit SD. the agency was very curious about how we achieved such a soft feel with video.

    A lot of TV newsrooms use the fluorescent lights to save on electricity and air conditioning costs. Also, they give a softer, more diffused light. I think Kino’s are probably one of the best, but there are many cheaper brands available. Just make sure you use bulbs with a color rendering index (CRI) of 90 or higher.

    I’m familiar with the KinoFlo Divas that use PC bulbs, but I didn’t realize that they are now using T5 bulbs too until I saw some at NAB this year. Does anyone know what KinoFlo rigs are using the T5 bulbs? They have a great range of colors. I use them to light my reef tank w/ a mix from 3000K to 20,000K and a 420 nm wavelength actinic.
