  AC3 Audio

  1. Can audio be compressed as AC3 from within FCP?

  2. I read somewhere that Compressor can do this, though I looked everywhere and could not find this option.

  3. How is audio compressed (or is it) if no settings are set for audio from within FCP or Compressor?

  It is in Compressor. You can get to it in Final Cut by going to FILE > EXPORT > USING COMPRESSOR

  The trick is that the pre-set isn’t called AC3. You want to find the Audio Formats folder and pick “Dolby 2.0”

  That’s the one you want. Even though it’s not called AC3, that’s what it is.

  Can you get to it if you export a QT file as self-contained and open in Compressor?

  I have read not to export directly from FCP in various locations.

  Where is this Audio Formats folder located? I checked and still do not see it.

  Hi rick,
  The only problem of sending things to Compressor from the FCs time-line is that everything is rendered again, even if you got or your sequence alredy rendered. And this can take a lot of time. But if you have everything rendered (make sure you are) you can export a refference movie fron FC and them bring it to Compressor. The refference movie will look at the already rendered files and the process will be faster.
  When in FC you EXPORT>QT Movie> you get a .mov file. The audio of those files is a PCM format (pulse code modulation) so basically the same that an .aiff or .wav. In the “Sequence Setting” you can change the data-rate and the bit depth.
