advice cloning
Posted by Tom Maloney on May 23, 2007 at 11:17 amI have been reading all of your seasoned users advice on cloning before upgrading. Thank you for sharing. My question, while my MBP is being cloned….if my up grade to FCP6 has problems what are the steps or how do I revert my MBP back to its old state fom the clone I did on a ext Lacie hd ? New to MACs here
Thanks all

May 23, 2007 at 12:24 pmGenerally, you would first clone the entire internal disk drive contents, then insert the software install disk that come wuith your MacBook Pro and erase all the data and format.
Install a fresh copy of what ever MacOS X came with your MacBook and then update to MacOS 10.4.9 and the proper Quicktime version for FCS2. Load FCS2 onto the MacBook and maybe put the content for DVD Studio, Soundtrack and Livetype on an external drive to save desktop space.
If you need to return to the original OS-Applications then go back through the steps in the second paragraph and use the clone tools to bring all the original content back.

May 23, 2007 at 12:55 pmThanks for the concise explanation. After this, do you have to install all of your other apps from scratch and update or does Carbon Copy Cloner allow you to port them back? Also is there an easy way to see what all the little FCP effects packages that were purchased from third parties (i..e. Noise Industries, Natress, etc.) you have?
I remember something about saving them to a project so they won’t be trahes withthe new install, but don’t remember the process- any help for a solo, part-time enthusiast?
Thanks,
Bill Doyle

May 23, 2007 at 1:41 pmWhen doing a fresh installion of the operating system, it is best to take the time to reinstall everything. If that’s not possible you can try using the clone tool to move any standalone apps back to the primary boot drive.
This might cause problems with those files written to permissions and other support applications folders if not restored properly.
As far as FCP specifci plugins – I would say it is not possible to move them from one copy of FCP to a newer one. probably best to reinstall fresh.

You can use Carbon Cloner to put your clone back. Essentially you would launch your Mac from the LaCie and then tell Carbon Cloner to put everything back on your old drive.

May 23, 2007 at 4:52 pmClone back. Take the drive you cloned to, and just clone it back to the system drive.
