  • FCP to AE then back to FCP

I’m editing an HDV project. I need to provide some shots to an After Effects artist. Is the best way to avoid color shifts to have my FCP time line set to RGB instead of YUV and to export using the animation codec? If this is not he best way to do this then please let me know what is.

    Thanks

RGB is only going to affect rendered material. So that might work if EVERYTHING on your timeline is going to get rendered in some way. However, I’d bet that AE and FCP still come up with different looks since they’re diffrerent render engines after all.

I would just export native files to your artist – which would be the best quality you can give them. Have them do their thing, and if you have such a color shift you can either fix it with a dissolve or color correct the files you get back from the AE artist.

I’m not sure what FCP is doing that is causing the color shift, but here is a way that seems to avoid it:

    * Give your AE artist your raw media, that way nothing gets changed via an Export from FCP. I used our Pro Import AE plug-in to get my shot into AE.

    * As you know, your artist cannot render directly back to HDV from AE, so he/she renders to the Animation Codec.

    * As you know, FCP shifts the color of the Animation Codec movie when you drop it back into your HDV timeline, so DON’T import the Animation Codec movie. Open the Animation Codec movie in QuickTime Player (Pro) and Export the movie to HDV.

    * Import this HDV movie into FCP, it plays in real-time and doesn’t have the color shift.

Is there any word yet when AE will support the HDV codec used by FCP?

    Probably not soon.
