i’d check out boxx and 1beyond. Saw them at NAB last year and they were really hot.

intel mac version of AE is rumored to be be in the works as well as an 8 cord macPro. that might be something to consider.

if you need it right away, i think i’d stay away from mac.

i experience frequent problems with a new mac pro, particularly with the cycore effects (i know they posted known issues with intel macs, but they haven’t fixed anything yet). plus, you’re running a powerpc emulator (rosetta) just to use adobe products, which not only wastes some of your system resources and causes those apps to open rather slowly, but that also, limits your available ram to all non-intel apps to 1.25 gb.

i had actually recommended to wait 6-9 months before getting this mac, atleast until intel native adobe apps were released, and possibly the 8 core mac pro, but the fear was that the money might not be there in 6-9 months, so we got it anyway.

if you can wait, the mac might be a good way to go, otherwise the others suggested would be better.

Actually I should have mentioned that it MUST be a PC. I am and all PC shop. (no offense to you ‘cool’ mac guys)

    Thanks,

I’ve heard the new Hewlett Packard HP xw8400 has 8 cores (2 x quad 2.66GHz Xeons) and is lightning fast..I’m trying to get info about prices in UK, but no joy from HP yet. I believe they are out in US already though. Should be alot cheaper than similar Boxx or 1Beyond systems..not sure though if there’s something in these other systems that puts them above the HP?

The 2 x dual-core version of the HP box currently runs Autodesk Smoke 2K very fast, so an 8-core one with Nucleo Pro should blast it’s way through most stuff in AE I would have thought. Fill it up with RAM and let me know how it goes if you choose this! When AE8 surfaces I’m guessing it will be 64-bit and hopefully have better multicore capabilities, so you should be laughing. Get a high-end nVidia or ATI card in there too and some fast drives.

Good luck. Hopefully I can get my hands on one soon..
