Reconnecting Audio in FCP
Posted by Paco Sweetman on May 15, 2007 at 12:08 pmI have been editing a film on FCP 5. On certain sequences I have exported the clips audio to Soundtrack Pro, changed it with filters etc and sent it back to FCP. Now I would like to reconnect the original audio before it was ‘sent’ to soundtrack so I could just have the raw audio when it was on the timeline.
Is this possible?

May 15, 2007 at 12:21 pmNumber one rule when editing in a non-linear system. Make Duplicate Timelines whenever you’re making major changes, such as tweaking the audio, adding SFX, or even when you’re ready for final color correction / graphics. If you don’t like what you’re doing, you can always revert back to an older version of the same project. A typical project here usually ends up with 10 to 20 timelines as I make a duplicate before we make ANY changes to a timeline.
In your case, if you have one timeline and you have NOT changed the names of the audio files when you went to Soundtrack and you did NOT overwrite those original audio files when you went to Soundtrack, you can highlight all your audio in the timeline, select Reconnect Media, then manually point FCP back to your original audio files.

May 15, 2007 at 1:28 pmGoing from FCP to STP is in fact non-destructive, and you can’t get around that. So you’re safe. You just need to replace the STP created file that is now in your Timeline, with the audio from the Mast Clip.
Re-linking media won’t work, as what happens in the FCP>STP round trip is that a new file gets made, non-destructive, so the original capture file is very different from the audio file STP crated and placed into your Timeline, it won’t relink, it won’t match up. It’s easy enough to find the Master Clip in the Browser and replace the STP audio clip with the original.
BTW, I’m a certified STP trainer, amoung my other titles. Trust me, you haven’t lost anything with the workflow you’re using.

May 15, 2007 at 1:29 pmI am assuming you use the “Send To STP Audio File” function, right?

May 15, 2007 at 4:07 pmGood going, you have both the STP fixed audio file, and your original capture file. But simply relinking media to the STP audio file rarely works, in my experience. You can do a Match Frame with the video portion in the Timeline window to find the original video clip. I wouldn’t “replace” the STP sound clip. I’d put the original on the audio track just below the STP clip. That way you can lower the volume on the one you don’t want to use, and not lose any opportunity of switching over if you find it necessary.
