question for upcoming project
I’m wondering if someone can help me understand the right size to import still pics into AE. The project I am working on is an All Sports video for a local high school. I’m using video and mixing in some still pics and doing some basic stuff along with 3D for the photos. The will be one segment that will be all still pics. The video will be projected onto two seperate screens approx 12′ x 8’each. It will either be played on DVD using a laptop or from a Mini DV tape from a tape player (not sure if there would be better choice?). I just want to be sure to get the best resolution for the photos, yet not boggin AE down with larger than needed file sizes. I realize I will need higher resoltion if I am zooming, but can someone tell me what they feel would be an adequate file size for such a project? If anyone has any experience or recommendations for this type of project I would greatly appreciate anything you might have to offer..

unless you plan to scale the photos larger than full screen, they would only need to be 720×480 (dv standard) or, if you’d prefer to stay square pixel for you photos (and usually i would), 720×540. if you want to scale them up beyond full screen, then estimate how much you’ll scale them (say 150%) and create you files at that size (about 1080×810, by my example).

adding a little zooming and panning motion into the photos, really adds a little something…makes it more interesting than a boring slideshow. AE handles reasonably size photos pretty well. If you think in terms of square pixels the size of video is only 640×480…photos that are 1280×1024 + or so will give you enough room to play with…without bogging you down. One other nice thing is that often there is only certain portions of the photograph that is very interesting, you can always choose to crop sections out by scaling to fit that area in the visable area… Starting with a larger photographs and scaling down is much preferred over starting with something small and scaling up.

it doesn’t matter how big your projection screen is, the only factor is what you’re feeding the projector. If you go with DV, there is no reason to work with anything larger than it needs to be for the maximum zoom you will perform in the timeline.When scanning, remember there are only pixels in video. DPI will only get you confused.

Thanks for the advice. Figured it was easier to ask now than change something half way through the project.
