well after days of wasted editing hours
i figured out (thanks mostly to this website)
that our log and capturing error was due to insider conspiracy
of apple’s security patch update which apparently makes log and capturing in fcp a nightmare.
their solution UPGRADE ! fantastic….gotta love them

anyway i saw that there were a few solutions one of them was to put the log and capture in the privacy section in system prefrences…

the question is (for anyone who knows) is this the capture scratch of any project i’m working on or some sort of main system file…

also do i have to do this everytime ?

    thanks in advance

If you have a smooth running system, do not upgrade. Especially if you are running an old (FCP 4.5 is two years old) application. You cannot be running the latest and greatest Mac OS if you intend on using older software. A some point the support for the older software will stop. As a matter of fact, Apple states that FCP 4.5 and Tiger (10.4) are not compatible. The fact that you were able to use it up to now was a fluke…one that many people have also done. But Apple said that the last supported OS version for FCP 4.5 is 10.3.9. No conspiracy.

If you must upgrade, you can always protect yourself by cloning your system drive with Carbon Copy Cloner (www.versiontracker.com) to an external drive so that you have a working system backed up in case the upgrade messes things up. Also, don’t automatically update just because it is there. BEFORE you upgrade, wait for a few days after the release and research to find out if it is safe to do so. Apple forums, the Cow, LAFCPUG…several others all have people that upgrade, or who post warnings about upgrading.

Actually, they had two solutions…upgrade FCP, or do an ARCHIVE AND INSTALL of 10.4, and only update to 10.4.8. But someone else found a neat workaround as well:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4417320#4417320

OlSchoolCutter tried with SUCCESS (see post in that thread).

Then follow these stesp and try (it’s free!):

    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. From the View menu, choose Spotlight.
    3. Click the Privacy tab to reveal the areas that Spotlight will not index.
    4. In the Finder, open your “Final Cut Pro Documents” folder.
    5. Drag the Capture Scratch folder into Spotlight’s list.

    thanks shane !

actually i’ve had the fcp upgrade for a year…but we’ve been in project mode forever and i never got around to the upgrade…my fear has been…that once i upgrade…something fierce would happen and all my old files would be corrupt as some level.

    thanks for the advice though
    appreciated
