  • Panasonic AJ-HD1200A deck – can’t not edit to tape

Posted by Phil Yunker on May 11, 2007 at 4:42 pm

I’ve searched for awhile and have only seen a few threads about the AJ-HD1200A not being able to be controlled. My problem is that I can not perform a edit to tape with this deck.
I have been told that this deck does not have edit capabilities, is this true? any help or suggestions would be appreciated?

Unfortunately, yes. It is true. I haven’t been able to use the edit to tape feature. I’m hoping at when I get the new AJA IO HD, I’ll be able to just put the timecode on the deck to external and lay off masters that way.

It hasn’t really been a problem for us yet because we don’t deliver anything on DVCPROHD and we have a different backup structure for our masters.

You could simply play out to it, and hit the record button… but I don’t think this deck is capable of insert or assemble editing… it’s just a player/recorder as I recall.

The newer 1400 will do what you want…

[Jerry Hofmann] ” don’t think this deck is capable of insert or assemble editing”

that is correct, there is no flying erase head to allow for ETT.

there are a couple of work arounds- I know Walter and I have both posted them in the varicam forum.

Yes, you can perform an edit to tape with this machine, but it is not perfect. I delivered over 30 or 40 HD masters cutting to this deck and they all had perfect timecode.

You have to control the deck via Firewire.

You can ONLY perform an Assemble Edit and you only want to do this either in the Black or the Bars at the beginning of your show.

You will need to offset the deck by 11 to 20 frames depending on whether you are mastering out to 720 or 1080i and whether or not you’re working with Drop Frame or NDF.

When I had this deck, I would perform an Assemble Edit at 00:59:00:00 and it worked perfectly everytime. It took me about three hours to perfect the offset on the timeline, but once I got it, it was consistent everytime and no show ever got rejected do to the timecode being off by even one frame.

I now own the 1400 which CAN use RS-422 during edit and is completely frame accurate.

The 1200 does not have your daddy’s “crash record”. If you are using Firewire output, it will read the TC from the FW and lay it down perfectly. So there’s really no downside except that you have to make the whole tape at once.

[Sean ONeil] “If you are using Firewire output, it will read the TC from the FW and lay it down perfectly. So there’s really no downside except that you have to make the whole tape at once.”

But keep in mind that if you are cutting 720p in FCP, that will be NON-Drop Frame TC which is useless for Broadcast Mastering. That’s why I always made the edit using the Assemble Edit Process.

We tested that FW output once, but since it was NDF, it was useless for us.

I would take tc out of our beta deck hooked to the tc in of 1200A, I’d set the timecode on the Beta for an assemble edit, change the tc of the 1200A to ext and then do a ETT with the deck control going to the Beta deck, HD SDI to 1200A and then when it came time I’d crash record on the 1200A that was getting it’s tc from the Beta deck. Worked like a champ. Firewire wasn’t really an option and this was easier believe it or not. The new 1400 deck solves all of that mess as has already been mentioned.

What a solution! I’m going to give that a shot as soon as I get back in the office.

    Three cheers for Jeremy!!!!
