  • Dropping 720 60P clips into NTSC 29.97 sequence

I’m editing a project that has some material shot on P2 at 720 60P but also a lot of stock video shot on beta and mini-DV. The final output will be to an SD DVD not HD, so I’m using the NTSC 8 bit uncompressed easy setup as my base sequence. I’m having trouble getting the 720 60P clips to play smoothly in the NTSC timeline. Obvious problem going from 60 frames P to 29.97 interlaced.

What is the best workflow, sequence settings or tools to use to get clean playback of the HD material on the NTSC timeline? I’ve toyed with the HD framrate converter. I’ve tried various filters with no success. Short of dubbing out to a beta tape and redigitizing I’m stumped.

You can use the Media Manager to copy the footage and downconvert it to 8-bit uncompressed and then use that. Or you can use compressor to convert the footage. Or drop it into the timeline and render.

I would run the HD material through Compressor to down convert it. Use the options under the Frame tab to try to optimize the conversion. IOW, run some tests to figure out which frame settings will give you the best quality.

    Thanks.

I’ll try those sgugestions, although dropping the clip onto the timeline and rendering still resulted in choppy video
