Weird edit to tape problem
Hey all,
i’ve got a strange edit to tape problem, im trying to lay back an uncompressed 10bit sequence out of my fcp via a kona LHe to my DSR-80 DVCAM deck. Basically i can get final cut to blank the tape with TC and black using the blank tape function in the edit to tape window however as soon as i mark my in, drag my sequence to assemble edit and basically click go, the machine cues to the tape to the in point and then plays.. but doesnt it never starts the record. I’ve also tried to do an insert edit with a fully blanked tape and the same thing happens.
Now im pretty sure its not a control problem as i can get the deck to record when i use the blank tape function, i’ve also tried it with my PVW2800 betacam deck and i get the same problem.
If anyone could shed some light on this that’d be great. oh and btw i can use the print to video function fine.

Perhaps these decks do not support editing.

no i am positive that both decks support assemble editing.

How are you sure? because the black and code works? This is way different then assemble editing. For instance, the HD1200A DVCPRO hd deck does not do assemble or insert edits, but the black and code works just fine. I am not doubting you, those deck may certainly be capable of edits.
If you are absolutely sure that these decks do assemble, you should first reset your easy setup by hitting control-q and choose the AJA KOna LHe setup that matches your sequence settings. Then you need to set the in point on the Edit to tap window, make sure the drop down menu on the top is set to master. Hit the mastering settings tab and make sure that everything is set properly there (like Print entire media instead of in to out). Also, be sure to check the device settings and make sure your device control is set to AJA SOny VTR just to be sure. Then you need to drag the sequence from your browser! to the assemble edit overlay in the edit to tape window.
Decks should be set to INT timecode and REC RUN modes. Do you have reference hooked to the deck? Are you sure the write protected tab isn’t flipped on the tape? SOrry for these basic question, but it usually always boils down to one little switch.

No problem jeremy, its usually always the little things that make the difference.
So, thats a yes to reference, and a yes to the TC settings in the deck being setup correctly and no, write protect hasnt been flipped.
I’ve gone through and checked all my output settings and device control settings and they are all what they should be.
I just tried again following your sets and had the same result. One thing i have noticed on the deck however is even though it seems to go intro ‘Edit Mode’ (that comes up on the display) the worlds ‘Not Editable’ flash a couple times on the deck and then go away.
Now i’ve had a quick search of the net and found a couple people saying the deck can edit… but after noticing the not editable message come up im doubting that more and more.
What i have been told however by the companies tech is that the deck has been used to Digital Cut projects out of their old Avid suite.. So this is where i got the info that the deck could edit, but it appeares they maybe wrong.

Trying blacking the tape without FCP (set tc in the deck and leave FCP on a black and frame and then manually hit play/record on the deck).
Are you getting a video signal to the deck? How is it hooked up? What format/resolution/frame rate is your timeline? What version of the Kona drivers/FCP are you using? Have you downloaded the latest Kona drivers?

Yes i can get signal to the deck fine, like (i hope) i said in my first post, i can see the video play down through the monitor attached to the deck, the deck just never starts recording.
Im going, Kona LHe card – to the Kona Breakout Box (so SDI in – YUV out) and then all YUV is then going into a SIGMA HPX YUV router and out into the dsr 80 being controlled by RS232 coming out of the Kona Box.
Timeline wise its an Uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 timeline at 25FPS (pal down here in NZ) 720×576 48.0KHz – PAL CCIR 601 Pixel Aspect Ratio. – And all footage on the timeline is uncompressed 10 bit 422 that has been brought it in via the LHe Card.
Running FCP 5.1.4 and im guessing from going – About AJA Kona Control Panel and it saying Version 3.3 so i guess im running 3.3… Im kinda new to this who AJA thing. I didnt set this Mac up btw.

Alright, let’s dig in.
Is the deck control gong through the router? If so, try going direct.
Another thing that bothers me is the Kona controls rs-422 and you mention rs 232 which might be why you are seeing that error. What kind of control is on the Beta deck?

Well control is via the kona card.. so rs422 out the breakout cable to the box. and then as i understand out of the box comes rs232 and goes to the deck.
COMs come out of my box and into a COMs patch bay.. which isnt used by anything else, not even sure why its there but oh well. Out the back of that patch comes 1 COMs cable which i manually pull out of one deck and put into the other when i switch between decks.
I’ve also got a couple DSR1500 around the place too not being used so i’ll connect up one of those and give it a try. The 1500s insides are the same as the dsr1800 and 2000s which i know assemble edit.
I’ll try and directly connect coms to the deck when i get a chance and let you know.

Rs422 comes out of the Kona break out box. I looked up the DSR-80 and it is rs422 as well.
If you can at all bypass the patch bay and hook direct from the deck to the Kona give it a go.

Check that you have the right deck control active. Older decks don’t like having more than 2 active audio channels. Go into the device control presets, open the rs422 setting you are using and make sure you have audio mapping set to 2 channels.
If that doesn’t work, try trashing the preferences. I’ve seen that fix deck control issues in the past.
