okay I’m going to be working on a project that will be delivered as 16:9 anamorphic PAL format (on dvd).
This project will have 3D graphics created by another company and they want to know what resolution I want them to render at. I though the logical thing to do was for them to render at 1024×576 (square pixels) which I will then scale horizontally in AE into a 720×576 format. But the guy from the 3d company said he could just render at 720×400 and it would not make any difference. But to me it seems I would have to scale this up vertically to make it fit the anamorphic size and I would lose vertical resolution in the process.
    So…who’s right? 🙂

720×400 is incorrect. This would be a letterboxed cinematic format squeezed into 16:9. Just proceed according to your original plan and do your stuff at 1024×576, then nest it into a 720×576 widescreen comp for final rendering.
