  • Correct pixel aspect ratio for map graphic in HDV 108050i project?

Hi I was supplied with an animated map graphic for my project. My FCP project is in HDV 108050i 25fps. The map jpeg was created in photoshop and then animated + exported in Aftereffects as a quicktime file. The image resolution is 1440 x 1080 (which matches my project settings) and the image aspect is 1.25 and pixel aspect ratio 1.66 fps 25. I chose the pixel aspect ratio on the basis of some test jpegs I was sent which I dropped in my FCP timeline. I judged this the best by eye.

I inserted the maps into my timeline, but only one out of three maps would render. FCP just would not render the other two, so in the end I used Compressor to reconvert the files using the HDV108050i codec. I was then able to drop the maps into my timeline without having to render them.

Now my problem! The text on the maps is very deterioted compared to the original jpegs. Both the one I rendered and the ones converted have the same deterioratio. I have put them in my timeline side by side. The pixels seem to be sliced off in places and the biggest text does not look sharp at all. I can only judge from Digital Cinema Preview as we don’t have a broadcast monitor. However even on the cinematic display the deterioration is plain to see.

I am just guessing that the pixel aspect ratio is the problem?? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can’t judge this properly unless you look at a video monitor. The Canvas does NOT show you the full resolution output under any circumstances, and makes gfx (rendered or not) look awful. This is particularly true with HD timelines.

Not saying that’s the only problem, but you need to overcome this first.
