  Graphics Card choice?

  Hey Guys

  which of the range of graphics cards are people leaning towards these days? I’ve looked on barefeats and it got all a bit too scientific to get a definitive answer!

  I’m looking at either the ATI Radeon X1900 XT (512mb) or the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 (512mb) for a new Octo MacPro with FCS 2, AE, CS2 etc…

  the NVIDIA is a lot more expensive than the ATI.

  what’s the verdict?

  G5 DP 2.0 (Power PC)
  4.0G RAM
  OS 10.4.8
  QT 7.1.3
  FCP 5.1.2
  BMD Decklink Extreme 6.0
  PAL Land

  ATI 1900 is the one we run here because it make Final Touch (now Color) fly and it really makes Motion run well. Not sure why the ATI is much cheaper, but it’s definitely the better card among all the folks I consulted before purchasing.

  I can’t figure out the huge price difference either. I take it the new macpros have extra wide PCIe slots so as to not take up an extra slot with the graphics card fan?

  Yes, that’s part of the marketing literature from Apple and they have views of the machines open without the door on the website.

  i’m about to order one of these X1900s, and when i search online i’m getting wildly different prices for “ATI Radeon X1900 XT”, from $189 to $699. how can i tell the difference on what is what??? maybe with my ignorance, i should just order through my “dealer” (CompUSA)?

  also, looking at getting a second monitor, but that will be another post…

  Make sure the card is for Mac not Windoze. The Mac cards are more expensive, so if you buy by price you might get the wrong one.
