Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy OT – 1/2″ tape – Dumb question

1/2″ for me has always referred to VHS tapes. “Get me a 1/2″ dub of this” has always meant “get me a VHS dub of this.”

Do we have any 1/2″ tape stock? VHS

Two countries, separated by a common language 😉

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

    Much appreciated.

I agree with Shane, that generally:

    1/2″ = VHS

    in the U.S.

However, I did work with one group that called beta sp, 1/2″ tape. Technically true, of course, just darn confusing.

    If it matters, I’d ask.

I’ve had several people call quarter inch audio tape half inch tape. Wrong – but it’s odd that it’s happened to me more than once…

[Wayne K 123.] “What exactly is 1/2″ tape, please?”

Tape that’s half and inch wide.

[Wayne K 123.] “What exactly is 1/2″ tape, please?”

Let’s see, there was 1/2″ open reel, vhs, s-vhs, w-vhs, d-vhs, D9, beta, betamax, ed-beta, betacam, betacam sp, digi beta, sx, imx, M, MII, D3, D5 to name a few.

Bottom line- “1/2 inch” is a vague term to use when calling for a tape stock or format. Each post facility may develope it’s own slang reference according to what equipment is actually in house but when you go out the door I think you have it right already.

When I first started working in video 1/2″ was open reel video and there were a few competing formats. I was still running into 1/2″ open reel video into the early ’90s.
