My client has hi-res .avi files I would like to utilize. Can anyone recommend a good route to get these files to work at a clear resolution in Final Cut?
    Thanks.

AVI is insufficient information. There were hundreds of codecs for the ancient architecture, only a scant few ever made it to Macintosh. Hardly any made it into the 21st century.

You will need to determine the source codec before we can help you much but the easiest answer is to ask them to provide you with a known AVI codec such as DV.

You might want to find a buddy who has a PC with the free Microsoft WMP encoder tools, might come in handy.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

As bogiesan mentions there are many things that an avi can be. avi is a wrapper, not a codec.
I’ve had not problem using DV AVI files in FCP without any conversion at all. FCP gives a warning but the files work without render despite that warning. I suspect DVCPro50 AVI will also work but I’m not sure about DVCPro100. Note that in Quicktime Pro you can save DV25 and DVCPro50 to avi but not DVCPro100. I’m not sure about other things wrapped in avi but if you can get them to play in Quicktime Pro they’ll either work or can be converted to work in FCP.
