  • Still & headline resolution question…

Posted by Peterson on May 1, 2007 at 3:46 pm

In FCP 5.1, I’ve noticed that when working on stills in a timeline ( DV 720×480/23.98/anamorphic checked) that the sharpness varies, sometimes unpredictably. For example, when placing a title over a move on a still, it is very sharp but as soon as the title layer stops, the photo become noticeablty fuzzier… I have checked through what I know about vest settings, etc… and all seems set to best.

Also, while I am revealing my ignorance, another thing: A headline remains appropriately sharp as intended ( scanned to allow for zoom ins & such) in a 720×486 timeline but when played in 720×480 timeline is fuzzy when played… I’ve experimented with same headline, same moves across or in, in the two different timelines… Hmmm – is there a special setting / aspect ratio formula for scanning photos destined for DV 720×480 to avod the fuzzies in playback (it always looks A-OK in the viewer)?

    Thanks-

    peter

    Peter,

I can assure you, fuzzy animated graphics are not inherent in FCP, there has got to be pilot error involved.

Click on Sequence – Render All and check out the list. Do you have Full checked? My guess is probably not… Even very experienced editors overlook that.

david, thanks for the reply… I know too well it is pilot error, this pilot in particular. I did of course do all the rendering I could to avoid the issue mentioned & like I said, no color bars presented themselves, nor does any rendering ‘take’, something I tried just to be sure.

I am on a project on a client’s system and have not come across this problem before. The second question about the identical headine scan with zoom / move being sharp in a 720×486 NTSC 601 timeline and not in a 720×480 DV NTSC timeline is likewise confusing…I no doubt have overlooked something and will continue to hunt

    best regards & thanks again

I suspect the problem is the case of the still being “too sharp” and during the move hard edge details are beating against the pixels. Very common problem, especially with scanned stills. Apply a little blur to the still original in Photoshop and you’ll get much better results.
