  • Quick question – upgrade path to FCS2

Posted by Ben Holmes on May 1, 2007 at 12:59 pm

I can guess at the answer to this – but wondered if anyone knew for sure (from Apple or similar):

We have upgrade copies of FCS1 having bought FCP4 full version previously. Can we buy the upgrade version of FCS2, which states you need a full version of FCS on the website?

Presumably, if the answer is yes, we will need to enter BOTH the FCS1 upgrade S/N AND the FCP4 serial? Worried that this procedure will be a pain if we need to do it in a hurry – assuming Apple will let us do it at all. The way I see it, we already own a full copy of FCS when we upgraded before – so it seems logical that we can do this – albeit in a pretty convoluted way.

If you know for certain that this path works, let me know – as I said, I can guess at the answer already, if you catch my drift!

Many many cow thanks in advance.

Well…. according to Apple at NAB, you can upgrade from any version of FCP all the way from version 1.

I have to assume that it doesn’t matter if you have a FCP version 1 serial number, you can upgrade to FCS2. At some point, you had to purchase a full copy, just use that serial number if your latest FCS serial doesn’t work.

My suggestion it to gather all your serial number before the upgrade. AND remember to clone your system drive before you upgrade. This will keep you from pulling out your hair if things go badly.

It should be the same as before. You can continue to upgrade your systems from one version to the next. It should not even ask for your original serial numbers, it should just go off your current FCS serial as a proof of prior purchase.

Ahh – but my point is that there is a different price for the upgrade from FCP>FCS than from FCS1>FCS2. So we are upgrading from an upgrade…
