Portable FCP editing setup.
Posted by Scott Davis on April 30, 2007 at 10:35 pmI am starting to get a lot of work away from home. Up till now I have been luging around my tower, drives, NTSC monitor, speakers, etc. What a pain. Bought a MBP installed FCP Studio and other apps. Is anyone doing a laptop based portable edit station? If so what are you using for montitoring (this is purely off line, finishing will be done elsewhere)? Needs to be easily portable.
Thanks for any sugestions,
Scott Davis

We’ve been pondering this a lot recently, and certainly the new AJA HD IO looks a pretty powerful solution tied to a MBP. The trouble is, if you need to hear and see your project properly, you are still going to have to lug a monitor and speakers around. Anthing for broadcast will require external drives, possibly scopes and so on – so it’s debatable if you really save much space overall, and at quite a performance hit.
Personally, we prefer to mount our systems in a 7.5 Tonne truck and drive it to the job! Still, doesn’t stop me dreaming of taking all of the above to an engineer friend and having the whole thing transplanted into a single box – A broadcast monitor with flip out 23″ screen and Mac Pro innards, Kona 3 backplane, integral speakers and drinks cabinet. OK, no drink cabinet. I think something like that could actually sell in a properly flight-cased solution.

The IO or the IO HD are both very good solutions if you need to monitor. However, if it is really off line, what are you monitoring requirements, really?
I’ve edited with the Sony 8 or 9″ battery powered monitors in the field. These are usually for shooting, and they are small, but in your situation small could be good. The resolution on these monitors is very good, and it is cool to be able to use a battery if need be.
This depends very much on what you need to see, and how well. There is a wide range of what could be considered acceptable for off line.

Depending on the format of video you are using your choices will be different.

That was exactly my thought. There are times I work from home with a duplicated media set and the only monitor I have is my MacBook Pro. I am cutting for content and overall flow and pacing, and then when it comes time to finalize, to the tower I go.
ALthough an IO HD with a small battery powered monitor (such as the Panasonic 9″ jobby, the BT LH-900A) will be sweet. I have taken that monitor and a 1200 or 1400 deck around with me and while it doesn’t fit in a backpack, it’s still weighs a lot less than a Tower.

May 1, 2007 at 4:32 amPrimarily most of the people I am working with are working in DV. I want an external monitor mainly so they can have something to look at. I have a DSR-ll I could use as a DA/AD to go out for monitoring. I would probably take it along anyway for loggin and diging. I am using a 2 drive (JBOD) Firmtek SATA drive system with the Express card adapter. Works well.
