FC Server & FCP; MM & Client Files Backup
First, a great big thanks to the Reporters of NAB. I have a feeling that I may be getting a better view of new developments than if I were actually there.
Questions:
FC Server has apparently improved the architecture of media management. Has that had a discernible impact on media management inside FCP? Or, does it make any sense to get Server for a single seat, just for its media management? I’m also not quite clear on the Client Approval dimension to Server — is Server useful for collaborating over the Internet or are the existing tools better?
The only problem I have with FCP 5 is making sure that I have backed up all my client files. Even if I have labelled everything correctly, and tried to be careful, I feel as if I can never be sure I have it all. Does Server make it easier to dictate the location of all files for a given project? iow- in one folder? My goal is to be able to put all files for a given project onto one external hard drive, and then put it all back on the RAID if I need to make a revision two years later — which happens.

Bob,
Go to the apple website and watch their “tour” of Server. That should answer many of your questions.
Most of the things you’re asking about can be done now at the finder level or with FCP settings. Server does NOTHING for internal media management. It’s more of a way to share and find elements in a workgroup environment. I would NOT consider it for a single seat installation.
