  Compressor job timing, best guess?

  Here’s the situation, I have a half hour show in a DVCpro50 timeline, on a G5 Quad and an Xserve RAID. Just a rough cut at this point with 2 tracks of video and audio, nothing special going on. Using Compressor’s 90 minute fastest setting, about how long should this take to encode for a DVD? This is a new client and I just want to plan my time with them for the encode by knowing roughly how long this should take. This doesn’t have to look great, just for cut approval, so within this setting, any tips on making it go as fast as possible?

  From experience at my studio, I plan on saving time by exporting a QT ref movie to start with. Other thoughts?

  Your best bet is to run a quick test. Just duplicate several of the same clip on the timeline, export it and compress it and see how long it takes.

  I would suggest a one pass (fast setting in compressor) if it doesn’t have to be the best quailty right now.

  Hi Chris,
  I’ve got just a G5 2x2Gbs with 4Gb RAM. Normally when I send a Self-contained or ref movie, it takes just a bit more than the same duration of the film for a “One pass” MPG2. And “Two passes” a bit more than the double. With your copmputer must to be faster.
  If I send from the time-line and there is a lot of rendering, can take ages.
