8mm to DVD to FCP to ???
A few years ago I converted all my childhood 8mm film rolls into DVD thinking it was the ultimate digital format for editing and archiving. Little did I know then that the format was compressed. Now I have finally come over my depression for wasting $750 on the conversion and plan to start editing the files using Final Cut Pro 5.0.4.
I have successfully converted the original .vob file into .dv, .avi, .wmv and .mpg formats using the VisualHub converter. To my disappointment only the .dv conversion is of original quality. The other formats show horizontally striped shadows when playing with Quick Time or VLC. When I load the .dv file to Final Cut Pro it also becomes striped.
Where should I look for a converter that doesn’t temper with the already mediocre image quality of the .vob files and in which format should I save the strips after editing with FCP?

Hi jonski,
There is a great application call MPGStreamclip. Just type in Google and you will find it.
Open your VOBs with the application and export QT movie. You can choose the codec and the audio set-ups. I recommend you. to get the best from the DVD, to export in DVCPro 50 or even better codec. Don’t export DV because you will get a DV Stream as the used by iMovie, and In FC must be full rendered.

now i just need to find a cheat sheet that helps me start editing. simple frame moving, deleting and text insertion planned. any suggestions where i should look?…

Sorry, I’ve been looking in a ditionary because I had not idea what a “Cheat sheet” was.
FC is quite intuitive but have many tools, options and ways to do the same in different modes. The toutorial that come with the application is a good starting, but you will need a manual if you really want to control it. I’ve being working the two first years without any help, discovering everything by my self and was really painful. Then I’ve got a couple of books and in three months I learnt more than in the two previous years.
