  exporting for DVD

  Hi there. I have a cartoon which in the future I’d like to properly put on DVD. I’ve currently been testing it on DVDs to try and get as good a quality as I can.

  The problem I have is that the illustrations in my cartoon contain very thin lines (around 1pt) and when viewing on my TV – the diagonal lines are pretty jaggy on the lower resolution.

  It’s not too bad. But I still thought I’d see if there was anything I could do.

  I’m exporting the movie from Final Cut Pro as DVCPRO HD and it looks great on the computer screen.

  Do any of you have any tips on how to maybe improve (if not cure) how the cartoon will show on a TV screen?

  Production on spec should be examined and planned by knowing the nature of the release medium before you begin work. Your single-pixel lines imply you also have out of spec colors to deal with, maybe other non-NTSC issues. But you have not stated what video format you have used for production.

  DVD, using conventional, currently available MPEG2 for standard def, will not give you what you want. You must either wait for a higher def DVD burner to become available to you or you accept SD and make the best of it. One way is to add 1.5 pixels of vertical blur. You’re going to be surprised at the output. Similar to the process of anti-aliasing, adding blur to interlaced video actually makes it look like it’s sharper. Most of the time, not always.
