RE:Help with Audio for Broadcast…..
Posted by Sonrisa28 on March 25, 2007 at 7:42 pmSo when i downmix what should i be setting it to in my sequence settings?Should i leave it a 0? The network wants tone for -20 and I am printing to tape to a Sony DSR-45… now on the back of the Sony the input selector is set to +4…Now I had the Ref levels on the front of the deck set -20 while it recorded….
I went to play back in FCP through log and capture and my levels were way lower although the volume didn’t seem much lower….Most of it was under -10….is this ok???
Thanks!!!!

What do they specify for peak? If you’re below that, you’re good.

March 25, 2007 at 10:34 pmThis what their specs say:
On a Betacam SP deck not above 2 VU (which is not what i am using)
Audio levels in any digital format should never reach 0db and should not peak above -6 db on a digital audio scale”So i am fine leaving it 0db for mixdown or should i take it to -3……or is it just pointless since on the input selector on the dvcam is set to +4….I appreciate your help!

March 26, 2007 at 2:38 amYou should follow the spec & make sure that no peak exceeds -6dB. That means you need to check your audio levels across your whole show, and look at the peaks. If any one peak is too high, you can lower the audio at that spot. If you have a lot of audio peaks above -6, then you might want to lower the volume across the whole show.

March 26, 2007 at 3:42 amWhatever you set your reference tone in FCP to be (some people set tone at -12, others at -20), you really should go more than 8db above that. So, for example, if your reference tone underneath your bars are at -20, then make sure you don’t peak over -12.
Personally, I set tone to -20 in my timeline and peak at -12. It just makes sense to me since the tone gets set to -20 on the deck when I lay off. Just seems better to keep it consistent that way. It’s also easy to watch the volume meter and make sure it doesn’t go above that line at -12.

Typo error. It should have read “you shouldn’t go more than 8db above that”.
Whoops.

March 26, 2007 at 4:43 pmno i understand that portion i guess again my question was in regards to mixdown, and the input selection on the back of the DVCAM deck….
I played around with it yesterday and it seems to be okay if i either mixdown to 0db or -3db and leave it on +4 for the input selection….But if i am wrong and this won’t translate to broadcast tv well please let me know…thanks
