Hey Guys… I’m hoping that plenty of you have already done this so I won’t have to reinvent the wheel. I’ve imported my video files from a Sony HDV tape via firewire. Then I export the files from FCP to After Effects. The files seem streteched and they don’t match the window in AE. I’ve tried comps with 1920×1080 and the Sony HDV (1440×1080).

And then when I want to come back into FCP, is there a codec that doesn’t require rendering? I just want to render in After Effects and then playback in FCP, but the timeline is sooo picky. Everything has to be rendered. And if I trim a clip and then try to stretch it back out, it wants to render again. Shouldn’t it still be pointing to the same piece on the hard drive?

    Thanks for your input.

What I always do with AE is work on the comp in the “true” resolution of the HD format, either 1280×720 or 1920×1080 as I find it easier to work like that rather than anamorphically.

But just before rendering, I’ll switch the comp to whatever the native settings are for that format. In my case I work with DVCPro HD 720 or 1080i material so I’ll just the After Effects Pre-set for 720 (960×720) or 1080i/60 (1280×1080) and render out.

The big thing to be sure of in AE is to get the frame rate correctly. DVCPro HD 720 for example presets itself to 29.97 which is not the correct frame rate for 720/60. I have to manually set the frame rate to 59.94 so the files will play in realtime in FCP.
