I am trying to convert some DVCProHD footage from a P2 card into SD 10-bit uncompressed. When I do this in Compressor using the “Advanced Format Conversion” setting, it does not seem to change the frame rate of the footage from 23.97 to 29.97. When I open the converted file in QuickTime, the info panel shows that the frame rate is 29.97, but when I bring it into FCP the framerate is displayed as 23.97 and it requires a render in the timeline.

I’m just not understanding why Compressor is not converting the frame rate. What should I do in order to edit this footage in a SD 10-bit timeline?

First of all, why are you doing this?

Second of all, if you must do this, why don’t you keep the frame rate @23.98 and add the pulldown at the very end?

We are needing to make master tapes (DigiBeta) at standard definition. But I figured out getting the right setting turned on in Compressor, so we are good to go.

    Thanks!

With a Kona card, you could do this in realtime.

Hey Jeremy, I have a Kona LHe. How would you go about doing this in real time? If I open a DVCProHD sequence and drop a DVCProHD clip in it with my Easy Setup still on 10-bit NTSC, I do get a preview on my SD monitor, but playback only happens in the Canvas and the external monitor is a freeze frame. Perhaps we should have sprung for the Kona 3?

You have a Kona card? The LH is perfectly capable of a realtime down-convert. Well then, open your Kona control panel and set your secondary format to 525i29.97 in the formats tab. Then choose which output is going to your digibeta deck (which I assume is an SDI feed). Click on the arrow in the control panel and change the format to secondary. In FCP, leave your easy setup in DVCPRO HD. FCP does not need to be in SD mode, only the Kona control panel does. Again, leave FCP in your HD easy setup. Play the timeline and you should be getting an SD feed to your digibeta deck.
