  • Macbook and G5 for FCP HD: Question

Posted by Kat Nofs on March 16, 2007 at 11:41 pm

Can my Macbook be used as an external hard drive into my g5 so I can import an FCP project from the macbook to the G5?
I know this isn’t a mac forum, but I thought someone here would know.
    Thanks!

You can boot your Macbook in ‘Target disk mode’ by holding down T when you boot. This allows you to run a firewire cable between the machines and lets the G5 see your Macbook as an external drive.

Of course, many people will rush to let you know why you shouldn’t use your Macbook internal drive as a scratch disk. Most of them have done it once or twice anyway…

If you go this route, MAKE SURE you eject the laptop from the desktop and power down before you unplug the FW cable between machines.

A disk with a system on it can get scrambled pretty bad if it is disconnected while still mounted. Powering down is just my own added super-cautiousness.

I had my laptop in target mode attached to my desktop and the cable was accidentally pulled by a curious kitten. My laptop refused to boot after that. I’m not sure what my technogeek did to get it back, but it was a miserable couple of hours waiting while he sprinkled magic geek dust on it.

Now I only use target mode under extreme circumstances.
