HDCAM down convert to DVCPROHD
Hi All
I’ve just inherited a feature that was shot on HDCAM (Not sure of the specs yet). Basically I would like to down convert the HDCAM footage to DVCPROHD within FCP so i can edit it without filling up my hard drive and also give us more time to find the right RAID to do our online with. How would i go about doing this?

I would get myself a G-Raid2 or Calgigit S2VR and capture My HDCAM footage using the DVCPro HD codec.

Yeah i’m going to get a Calsigit S2VR but do i need it to capture DVCPROHD? I thought u can capture that on a normal drive. Also do i just change my capture settings to DVCPRO HD and it will just down convert it for me? I wont need a special card?

Liam, I’m working on a project just like that right now. To do the job properly you need a capture card and the best for the job are AJA Kona. I’m using the Kona LH and its fast and glorius. Don’t be tempted by the Decklink Extreme card at about the half the price, because its lacking the onboard hardware the Kona has the helps scale DVCProHD.

Yes, you just pick up an AJA Kona card and it will do the conversion in real-time. That’s the best way to do this.

HMMM I already have decklink extreme..So this isnt going to work huh? Which AJA Kona are u talking about the 3?

You can capture DVCProHD on a firewire 800 drive or similar – the G-Raid is a cheap and reliable solution. DVCProHD is 100Mb/s so around 12.5MB/s – this performance is easily achieved from a cheaper array. It looks great too.
If that’s an HD Decklink card, and it has a preset for DVCProHD via HD-SDI, then you may be in luck. I know the Kona 3 and Kona LH do this encoding and can play back to your HDCAM deck from a DVCProHD timeline. Depending on your project requirements and mastering standards, you may be suprised how close DVCProHD gets to HDCAM quality. Many people edit and master in this format.

You’ll be very happy with the Kona LH and the breakout box too. When the guys around here like Walter and Gary say the service at AJA is great, they’re not kidding. The tech support guys at AJA are realy knowledgable about all the fine points of the Kona gear and software, and about FCP as well, so you only have to make one call to get all the help you need.
