Loud audio pop when switching apps
Posted by Chris Linke on March 14, 2007 at 5:26 pmCan anyone help with this annoying problem? Whenever I change focus from FCP to some other running application, or to the finder, or switch focus back to FCP, the act of doing so is always accompanied by two loud, quick audio pops coming over the analog outs of the AJA card. On the big speakers in the edit suite, it’s quite jarring.
I’m using a PowerMac G5 quad 2.5 GHz, OSX 10.4.7, Final Cut Pro 5.0.4, AJA Kona LHe.

March 14, 2007 at 6:57 pmCall AJA Tech support, sounds like something on your end as we’re running three Kona suites (have been running Kona 2 years) and it’s silent when switching apps. They might be able to figure it out, I’m betting it’s some sort of an audio loop or something.

Are you running analog audio through a mixer or not?

March 15, 2007 at 6:07 amis there phantom power applied to the inputs in the mixer? A loud pop means there is DC in the line which is frequently the phantom power switch turned on by mistake….

Yes, I’m using a standard mixer setup where all analog audio coming into FCP goes through the mixer, and the output of FCP goes to one of the stereo returns on the mixer, which we monitor using its solo button. The mixer is an Alesis Studio 24.

No, phantom power is off.

Do you have an audio loop somewhere? We run Mackie 1202’s in all of our rooms and like I said in my first post, been using Konas for over 2 years (CineWave’s before that) and have never had any sort of audio issues when switching between apps.

March 15, 2007 at 7:04 pmWell, guys…it’s not popping anymore, and I haven’t the slightest idea why. I was playing around in a completely unrelated area, namely trying out the AJA Kona TV in conjunction with the QT timecode burn-in setting in the control panel, and playing QT files with it. After that digression, I discovered that the system was no longer popping when jumping in and out of FCP.
Makes no sense, but it’s definitely not the first time I’ve accidentally solved a problem without knowing how I did it.
Thanks for your help, everyone.
