  Final Cut Pro 4.5 to idvd

  Hello
  I need some help! I’ve been trying to export a video from FCP 4.5 to idvd but all of a sudden I’m having trouble. I’ve been using the following method: Export/Using QuickTime Conversion/QuickTime Movie/Movie Settings/Video-Best – this seems to be the best quality image I can find, but all of a sudden I’ve been getting “drop outs”, they look like hazy colour bars which cover half a frame, and the more I try to export, the more these “drop outs” are developing. They are not on the clip, you can only see them after exporting using this method. I seem to be able to cut them out using different parts of the clip but then they just appear elsewhere and they’re multiplying!!

  So, I tried a few other methods of exporting ie: Export/QuickTime Movie/Settings:Current Settings… and Export/Using QuickTime Conversion/DV Stream, but neither option has as good a quality image. I’ve managed to get rid of the “drop outs” by using these alternative methods but the image is softer/colours have less contrast and it’s super important for this video as originally shot on super 8mm so already grainy…

  Any help or advice would be really appreciated! I don’t really understand the whole compression thing, this video is 11 minutes long, I don’t really know if it needs to be compressed. I just want the highest res best image I can get, without drop outs. If anyone knows what is causing the drop outs, or can suggest the best method for exporting for me I would really appreciate it!!!

  I don’t use iDVD but I usually use the export as reference method to go to DVDSP.
  This has a few drawbacks but, until a production is completely golden, I use reference movies to burn DVDs for approvals and testing of the authoring.

  See the FCP manual for exporting as reference. Then just drop the icon onto iDVD or import it. Then let iDVD handle the compression and encoding to MPEG2 for you. I uses the same engine as Compressor.

  Umm, as I say, I do not use iDVD but I’m fairly certain it support reference movies.

  Use Export/QuickTime Movie/Settings:Current Settings. It should give you excellent results. Check your DVD on an NTSC monitor. DON’T evaluate it on your computer display. I’ll bet that’s why you’re unhappy with the result.
