editing HD?
I have a potential client looking for a shoot/edit on HD. I’ve never done anything like this, though I’ve been shooting and editing Beta SP for 25 years.
I have 5.1.4 FCP on a Mac G5 Quad. I have an AJA OEM that came with my Media 100Hde system. So it’s an HD Aja. I have Cal Digit S2VR 500 GB. How would I be able to to edit HD on this system?
If I rented an HD monitor and deck would I be good to go? What would I need to rent? Or would I need more or different drives? Any other suggestions? Thanks much.

What format of HD? There are many. HDV, DVCPRO HD, HDCAM, D5, XDCAM…And then several formats within those types…
I don’t think the AJA card will work. If it was designed for the Media 100. Call AJA and ask to be sure. But yes, with any format of HD, you will need a card and HD monitor to view the footage for color correction. But there are several formats of HD that are capturable via firewire…HDV, XDCAM, DVCPRO HD.

I’m thinking HD cam. Why wouldn’t the AJA card work? If it’s designed to cut HD on Media 100, and it works on my FCP software also?

Actually, believe or not, it does. It is recommended to keep Media 100 and FCP on separate partitions/hard disks each with their own system install. You will have to reboot if you want to switch from one app to the other. I was helping a buddy who refuses to get rid of his Media100 system and this turned out to be best of both worlds. Two apps, one piece of hardware, one machine.

Actually, I have two bootable drives…one with Media 100 HDe and one with FCP 5.1.4. It works great on my G5 Quad. Usually I don’t mention it here because instead of getting my questions answered I get comments about how it won’t work.
So my question is what do I need to edit HD on this system?

As long as your AJA truly supports HD editing in FCP (like an LHe or a Kona 3), then you’re good to go with the S2VR Duo so long as you’re cutting HDV and DVCPro HD.
If you’re going to cut uncompressed HD, then you will have to have something faster like two or more Duo’s striped together. The S2VR HD can technically cut uncompressed HD using one box, but we’ve had some reliability issues with ours and they’re addressing that issue now. At the moment, we’re running four S2VR Duo’s striped as one unit and we’re getting about 350MB/s and faster.
