  • Extending motion effects through dissolves

Posted by Radiofreebc on March 5, 2007 at 6:03 pm

I’m trying to animate still photos (sort of a Ken Burns effect) by adding motion to the clips. I’m finding it really difficult to extend movements through dissolves, and I find that my motion stops on the edit point, and makes the dissolves look sloppy. Are there any methods for extending motion beyond a clip’s out point so that it will continue to move through a dissolve? I can’t find anything in the manual, so I’m hoping someone here can help. Is this a difficult process, or is it something simple that won’t take too much time?

Thank you for any help you can give me on this.

A quick way I have figure it out is to map GO TO IN and GO TO OUT, so that what I am working on a clip, and I hit GO TO IN, it will go to the in inpoint of a clip as seen thru the dissolve. Then I put my new keyframe there and delete the other ones. I find it easier then manually moving them. I just make my keyframes and move, then add the dissolve, double click on the clip to load it into the viewer, click GO TO IN, and add the keyframes at the head, then delete the previous ones…then GO TO OUT, add new keyframes, then delete the previous ones. Works great.

That’s a good little trick Shane. Thanks.

[Chris Poisson] “PS: “I hate you Shane!””

Are you trying to quote the little boy in the movie? Just because I beat up your dad?

Shane’s technique definitely works, but I prefer to do this without opening anything in the viewer. Turn keyframes on in the timeline and just work your way through dragging each of them to the far side of the dissolves. If you animate without transitions and then add them, the ending and beginning keyframes for two adjoining clips will be on the same frame in the middle of the transition. I believe dragging the upper part will affect the keyframe for the first clip, and the bottom part the second clip (or vice versa – it’s been a while).

If you’ve already animated everything, and this process is tedium rather than tweaking, then I think you’ll find this way a bit faster as you don’t have to open each clip in the viewer individually.

What the heck was that corny commercial that ended with “you’re both right!” Well, you are, but then there’s always PanZoom Pro, which at least for stills that animate requires NO KEYFRAMES! A fine way to cure one of FCP’s biggest failings, get rid of ’em.

I wonder if FCP 6 will fix this?

    Shane,

For the record, “Chris” was the tough rancher who tried to throw Shane ont of the bar at the beginning of the movie, but Shane kicked his ass. But they became friends later in the film and Chris left the bad ranchers. (Just saw Shane on TNT a couple of weeks ago, still one of my favorite westerns. But I was amazed by how much day for night is in it, and REALLY BAD DFN at that!)
