OT – Monitor question
Posted by Max Frank on March 1, 2007 at 12:20 pmHi,
Forgive me if this question has been asked and answered before – couldn’t find what I was looking for in the search.
If a branded monitor has the exact same technical specs [ie, contrast ratio, response time, etc] as say, a 20″ Apple Display is there any reason to expect it would be any less good?
Thanks in advance,
Wayne

I think that the electronic conponent are also important. Think about two PCs with the same specs (Processor, RAM etc) they may work the same, but the one with a better electronic SHOULD last longer and have lest troubles. About monitors I think can be the same. Not much technical answer, but I think in the long run, quality is cheaper.

I bought a ‘Chimei’ 22 inch flat monitor recently. I paid $300. compared to the $1,000. for the Apple 23. Big price difference but also very big image quality difference. I have my old Apple Display (17 inch) next to it. There is no compareson with the picture quality. But it is $600. cheaper and I use it for the FCP layout — gives me lots of room. I like that. I do my video watching and color timing on a Sony NTSC monitor. So price if important can work but if you want the rel deal go with the Apple display.
(in my opinion)

The only monitors that I’ve found that compare to the Apple Displays are the Dell displays. I run a Dell 2407 in my suite and it looks about every bit as good as the Apple 23.

Other than UL, who insure that you will not get electrocuted when plugging in a new monitor, there is no government agency or watchdog group that regulates the display industry, and therefore no enforcement insuring industrywide standarization of computer monitors and TV monitors. So, when you say the specs are identical, there is no way to know if thats true. It realy only means the typing on the spec sheet is identical. The only way to gauge monitors is with your eyeballs or with a recommendation from someone you trust, the specs are essentially meaningless marketing hype.
