HDV through Kona 3 to HDMI
Posted by Hamilton Studio on February 27, 2007 at 7:42 pmAlright I have a Kona 3 in the new intel G5 Mac running FCP 5.1.2. I am trying to capture and play back HDV from a Sony HDR-FX1 through a firewire connection.
I have captured the 1080i (1440×1080) footage using the easy set up
HDV1080i60 setting. The problem I am having is there is no playback output setting selected
and the Kona does not have a 1440×1080 playback setting. How do I get
this footage out of the computer and on to our hd monitor? We have the FCP/Mac connected to the monitor through an HDMI cable.Any suggestions? Do I need some sort of third party plug-in?
Help.-c

February 27, 2007 at 9:30 pmPlayback setting should be 1920 x 1080. I didn’t think the Kona card had an HDMI output but I don’t own one. Certainly no mention of it on the AJA website.
The component analog outputs from the Kona to the HD monitor should work but without any mention of the brand and specs of your monitor, I am guessing. Details on how you have connected your monitor would also be helpful. I suspect you are trying to use your graphics card. Use the Kona.

No Mac can be an Intel G5. Those are mutually exclusive tags. I have a black magic DeckLink card, and not a Kona, but I can say you won’t find a 1440×1080 output setting. HDV is an anamorphic format, and it gets stretched to the normal 1920×1080 for display. See if you have an easy setup for “Kona HDV 1080i60” or something along those lines. Make sure your card is set to output that resolution in system preferences, and hook it up to the Mac with something other than HDMI because according to AJA’s website, the Kona 3 doesn’t have HDMI.
Sorry… low blood sugar. I’m going to grab a soda.
Good Luck,

February 27, 2007 at 11:07 pmUmm OK.
1) You have a Kona 3 – So you would be much better off connecting an HDV deck to it via the component connections, and capturing as DVCProHD. It sucks a lot less than HDV. That’s a general heads-up for you.
2) The Kona 3 has no HDMI output. It also scales the 1440×1080 HDV frame to 1920×1080 for playback on an HD monitor. I assume that you have maybe connected a DVI-HDMI cable from the Mac DVI output 2 to the HDMI input on some sort of flat screen TV. THIS IS WRONG. You should be using the HD-SDI output on the Kona 3 to connect to an HD monitor, or the component outputs if that is not an option.
3) Capturing via firewire and playing back via DVI requires NO Kona 3 whatsoever, so if it’s spare, we could do with a second hand one! It is not, however a correct use for a high-end video card. Please have a look at the Kona manual, it shoudl correct many of your misconceptions about setting up your system.

February 28, 2007 at 2:40 amIf your monitor is DVI or HDMI, you need the Blackmagic HDlink or similar product to view a true broadcast video output on an HDMI or DVI monitor. It converts HD-SDI to HDMI. Not all monitors are supported though.
If you need a quick and free solution and you already have an HDV deck, don’t even use the Kona for monitoring. Use the HDV easy setup to output over firewire, plug the firewire into the deck, and plug the monitor into the HDMI port on the deck. In other words, just monitor through the deck.

FCP can’t monitor HDV over firewire. Maybe this will change some day, but with the second or so delay on playback from HDV source to FCP display I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t. To output HDV to a monitor you need a card.

Help.”I answered you in the Kona forum. Simply select AJA Kona HDV Playback and you’re set. You need to run your video to the monitor via SDI or Component.

Can you clarify that? How do you output back to HDV tape if you can’t spit video out of firewire. I admit I’ve never tried to nor needed to monitor through the deck, but I have recorded to tape over firewire. So what you are saying makes no sense. Is this some sort of bug?
As far as audio sync, the trick is to monitor audio through the deck as well. Then it will be in sync.

It’s no bug. HDV needs to conform before it can export it to tape. A process taking a long time. Conforming the footage from an editable format back to the format that the tape can accept. You can only output HDV via firewire by using PRINT TO VIDEO. You cannot simply play the timeline out to the camera and hit record. This is because of the GOP structure of the format…it doesn’t allow playthru to the camera.
The only way to monitor HDV is with a capture card, like the Kona or Decklink cards, or external box like the Matrox MXO.

March 6, 2007 at 7:48 pmWow, you’re right. One more reason I guess not to work in HDV if you can avoid it.
