I have a Mac Pro 3.0Ghz, 8 gb ram, OS 10.4.8. I have one side of the raid with 7 drives stripped to raid level 5 journaled. Connected via fiber channel. I’m capturing from Beta SP that is converted to SDI with embedded audio and into the Decklink Extreme PCIe card on the latest driver. I have FCP 5.1.2. The issue is when I have it set to capture to the Xserve raid, the image freezes but audio continues on. There are times that it actually freezes so long it actually throws a “locating time code” error on the capture window. I put the xserve raid drives into privacy of spotlight and that seem to help, but not completely.

Now if I set these to my 3 internal drives that are stripped as a raid, it doesn’t have that problem at all.

    Thanks,
    Chris

One thing is that you shouldn’t have your media drives journaled. Journaling can decrease performance.
Here is an Apple article on optimal XServe RAID settings

I had a similar problem. The fix for me was disabling the host cache flushing in the xRAID admin.
