Re: Sync issues for 720P DVCProHD
Posted by Arjun Rao on February 22, 2007 at 4:11 pmWe are trying to digitize DVCProHD 720P DF using the DVCPROHD 720P 30 Codec on FCP.We recorded sound on a sound devices Hard Drive. We recorded using Time of Day timecode. We are having trouble syncing the video and audio. Would also like to know if FCP defaults to NDF when you digitize DF footage. We are using a AJ 1200 Panasonic deck,Kona 3.
Look forward to receiving suggestions.

Not a good idea since FCP only sees 720p as NDF…
Progressive frame rates want to be NON DROP in FCP.

February 22, 2007 at 10:23 pmDear Gary,
Thanks for the reply. This means that the timecode between audio and video is not going to match up. One of our assistant editors digitized part of the footage at 59.94. Will we be able to cut a sequence with footage digitized at 30 fps and 59.94?
Thanks

We also digitized P2 footage which was progressive but has been captured as Drop Frame? Look forward to your reply. Thanks

first if it was P2 my guess is you transfered the content and did not capture.
while the timebase is 23.98, 29.97 or 59.94 it is actually NDF.
FCP will not allow you to handle the 720p content as DF.
The timing is so that you are able to do a realtime down convert, but FCP will not allow you to set the footage at DF.gary adcock

audio does not have TC only the recording does. Audio is recorded as feet and inches or length of time.
while the TC is used to sync the footage – audio only files (like aiff) do not support TC.is there no sound on video tape to match to? if not, yes you will have to sync the audio manually.
This is why you need to plan when you start working in formats you are not very familiar with.
The SD audio recorders you commented about offer both DF and NDF timecode at 24, 30 and 60.gary adcock

yes I do.
I am a big fan of using DVCPROHD for my production. Like walter here on the list I can use the native codec for any number of productions without loss in quality.
For TV I usually stays as DVCPROHD thru the entire process – unless there are very heavy motion graphics.
For film outs- I use the DVCPROHD as a frame accurate offline from my masters- so I get to preview the project in HD and when time comes for the final conform, I have the ability recapture with extreme accuracy at 10bit from the tape for the highest quality possible. No EDL issues no re-conform issues from SD 29.97 into a 24p master.
