I have a 1080i DVCPROHD tape that I am trying to digitize from my Panasonic AJ-HD1200AP. When I play the tape, I get nothing but black. If I shuttle, I get digital noise. The tape has been checked on another deck and definitely has media on it. I noticed that when the tape is in, the deck still has a 720p light on the front of it. Is there a deck setting I need to change to get it to play properly?

Yes, you must dig through the menus and change the deck from 720 to 1080 mode.

Eject the tape, find the sys format menu (basic menu # 020 and change to 1080i) and then find video menu #630 and then change from 720 to 1080. You might have to power cycle the deck for the setting to take place.

    That worked. Thank you.

FYI, there’s a setting so it will automatically playback whatever format is on the tape.

The 720p light means it’s set to record 720p, not playback.

But you have to make sure that the 1080i out setting is set to 1080i, otherwise it’ll cross convert to 720p or other. That’s why it’s better to just set the deck to 1080i and forget it.

[Sean ONeil] “The 720p light means it’s set to record 720p, not playback”

I was told that the 720p indicator on the front of the 1200a deck shows playback as well as record settings

    a) the tape in the deck was recorded @ 720

    b) the deck is set to record and playback 720p onto the blank tape when it is inserted in the deck.

720p tapes set to playback at 1080 do not highlight this indicator.
