Non drop to Drop D5 7s0 p 59.94.
Because Final Cut won’t let you do a drop frame timeline when working with 720 p 59.95 8 bit uncompressed, we don’t know what our segment times are until after we have output that show. So that requires us to go in and insert the slate again. However, we have never been able to do inserts properly on the D5. So what is the best way to either 1. Insert on a D5 or 2. Figure out the act breaks for the slate before outputting?

Copy and paste your sequence into a DV Drop frame timeline. But don’t render anything. Just go to the act breaks and note the time.
I have a way of using slug to figure out what the show time target is in DF, and then how to calculate what that will be in NDF:

Well, if you are outputting to a D5 at 720p59.94…then you are outputting NDF, right? No…I see you are outputting to D5 DF.
Well, the trick is to figure all this out beforehand, THEN output. Not having to go back and insert edit NDF to DF. Messy. I just wish FCP would have DF timelines for 720p59.94…stupid that it doesn’t.

We blacked the tape DF and are using a NDF timeline. Now we see that it is laying to the tape off by a couple frames. Ugh, WHY???

It might be because you are outputting an NDF timeline to a DF tape.
Sorry man, when it comes to outputting to D5 or HDCAM, I go to a post facility where they handle this. Cheaper than me renting the deck.

with my kona the setting 720p59.94 8bit settings say “same as editing time base” and DF is grayed out meaning that it has been chosen –I can change this to 30 NDF or 60NDF however.
59.94 can be drop or non drop- it is just 23.98 that can only be Non-Drop

Not in FCP it can’t. Choose 720/59.94 and you will not be able to choose Drop Frame in the Sequence Settings. Doesn’t matter if you choose DVCPro HD, 8bit or 10bit HD Sequence presets, you can ONLY do NDF timelines. This has caused a LOT of headaches here trying to master to tape, but through trial and error, we pretty much have it figure out.

We’ve figured it out just by blacking the tape with DF timecode then outputting it. What would be great is if we could figure out how to insert edit on our d5. You’d think for 70,000 you’d be able to do something like that. Any suggestions?
