  AVCHD Format in FCP

  Hello, I have a student who has a Sony HD camera that saves onto a harddrive in AVCHD format. Doest FCP support this? If not, is there a work around?

  Only if the camera has HDMI out, and you have a G5 or MacPro that can support this capture card:

  Then you can capture the footage as DVCPRO HD. There is no native support for the format at this time.

  Here’s a quote from Panasonic’s Feb 5th 2007 press release:
  “With the introduction of our AVCHD recording system, Panasonic expands its ability to offer professionals and video enthusiasts high-quality, solid-state acquisition solutions at a price that they can afford…
  More sophisticated editing software from third-party NLE companies is expected in the Spring. In addition, Panasonic is developing a professional AVCHD recorder that is expected to be available by end of 2007.”
  Canopus have announced their plans to make Edius compatible within that timescale.
  Maybe, given Apple’s close relationship with Panasonic, FCP will also be given compatibility….
  (Of course Sony and Panasonic versions of AVCHD may not be ‘standardised’….)

  alternatively try switching NLE, Canopus offer a free AVCHD converter
  https://www.canopus.co.jp/download/drivers/winxp/avchd_converter.exe
  converts to an avi format (probably compatible with canopus systems only)

  or just get a Blackmagic Intensity card and capture direct from the HDMI out

  you’ll need to register an acoount (free) on the site to reach this area … alos has free download of playback codecs for Canopus codecs (PC only)
