i just purchased a mbp 2.16 GHz 17″. i sent in the dvd’s to upgrade to the universal final cut studio last week (man they are slow.) i hope that resolves these issues, but just in case…

my canvas window won’t ‘refresh.’ here is what i mean. say i have 3 layers of video (1) video (2) lower third graphic (3) title. so i need to move the title in relation to the lower third. i click on the title in the timeline, and its wireframe appears in the canvas; i move the title in the canvas, but as soon as i click on the title in the canvas window, the lower third graphic disappears… so now i can’t see how to move the title in relation to the lower third. the only way i get the lower third back is to change my view from ‘image and wireframe’ to ‘image.’ then if i have to move the title again, i have to change the view back to “image and wireframe.” so to do a simple title takes a very long time and is very frustrating. please help.

also, why can’t i use my dvi output to monitor my video? i have a sharp lcd tv with a dvi in. it works fine as a monitor, but fcp doesn’t recognize it in the “video output” options in the prefs. the only options i have for video output are “none” and “digital cinema preview-main.” main is my macbook pro.

So you’re not using the universal version of the software right now?

That’s the problem. I’m surprised you can do ANYTHING with it, actually. Once your new discs come you should be fine.

The DVI is not a video output. It it used to mirror your MBP or attach a second computer monitor. To properly setup your video output, you need to connect a DV camera/deck via FW and take the video output (s-video or composite) and connect that to any TV/LCD/Plasma video input.

The Matrox MXO will allow you to take the DVI output from your MBP and display it on your Sharp LCD.

I could be wrong about this, but if OS X recognises the second monitor via the DVI output, FCP should allow you to use it as a second desktop or ‘video’ window. Try that F7 key on the MBP or check the help for monitor setup.

Where Steve is right about the MXO is that the DVI output you’ll see for video will probably not look very good on your TV, as it will not have the correct refresh rates for video. As I understand it, the MXO is supposed to get rid of that problem and display video ‘properly’ via your monitor/TV. For all I know it does – but looking at video via a TV or monitor is not a proper solution for colour-correction etc. – Be alright for client viewing maybe. Hooking up an output via a FW device will definitely look better, and actually look like interlaced video.

If you can’t get a picture – even mirrored – on the TV, your TV doesn’t support the resolution or refresh rate you have selected. Mine is very fussy via a DVI-HDMI connection (from my Mac Mini) although it works a charm via VGA. If your TV has a VGA input as well, you may want to try that as well via a DVI-VGA lead. I was amazed to find my Loewe give a sharper picture, with widescreen options that I did not get via DVI/HDMI.

Of course, I could be talking rubbish. Always a possibility.
