I’m capturing 35 minutes of HDV using Capture Now. All goes well- 70 clips show up in the browser. Except the last clip- 20 seconds of footage. I can see the video being captured but it doesn’t show up in the browser. Nor anywhere else on my G5. Tried giving it different names, trashed prefs, repaired permissions.
    Never had this before.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Wolf

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

    Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”

Click the following link for instructions.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

    https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
    or
    https://pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue/

This is one FCP tip that has helped in solving hundreds of “odd” problems.

On some HDV cameras, the group of pictures is not terminated when the camera cuts. If you have a really short shot, the datastream may not be able to recover in time to catch the clip.

Are there breaks in time between your other capture now clips of several seconds? This would be a good indication that the format is the issue.

For HDV, it’s a good idea to preroll 10 seconds and postroll 10 seconds for each shot, just to be sure of capturing the entire usable shot, especially when using JVC cameras.

Matte, thanks for the suggestions but quitting FCP and restarting (in Safe Mode) I do as part of trashing prefs and repairing permissions.

Steven, 20 seconds for a shot shouldn’t be any problem in HDV. I hope… I use a Sony Z1, by the way. I’ve captured like this many times before.
I’ve retried several times- starting to capture in the shot before or in the shot itself, but no go. When I Capture Now on the shot before, it will capture that fine but when it plays the Dreaded Shot… no clip. Very odd. Things is, its my last shot where people say goodbye. I NEED that shot.

While we’re at it- am I the only one who gets the error-message when hitting the ESC-key when aborting HDV capture now? I’ve never been bothered by it because it captured fine but I always wondered why it labels this action as erroneous.

Just tried capturing the last part by loggin it first and this is what happens- the in point won’t stay put, it automatically changes to the same timecode as the outpoint. Happened with two different in points…?? So something is screwed up with the timecode. How to solve this, other that try to copy the tape to another one and replace it with new timecode?

Okay, succes at last. I changed the offline media start point in the browser and presto! (still curious to know why this happens but at last I can now use that shot!)

    Thanks for your help,

    Wolf

PS If someone can answer the question regarding the error-message when using the ESC-key to stop capturing HDV, I’d be much obliged!

Sounds like you have more HDV experience than I do.

Can you dub the offending shot onto another HDV device perhaps?
