I have been wavering for a while between buying a 24p camera and HDV. Now that the Sony HVR-Z1U has come out, it looks like the best bet for me. I have a couple questions. Right now, I want to shoot in 24p but convert it video (30) to edit. Is that easy to do in FCP 5.1? If I get the hard drive that comes with it, there are these MT2 i think files. i understand FCP does not read those and that i would have to use MPEG streamclip or something to convert it. Is there a loss of quality?

I just don’t want to blindly get this camera. Thanks.

Unless Sony has changed the workings of the Z1 camera compeletly, which I sincerely doubt, the Z1 does not shoot 24p. It does have a mode that simulates 24p, but not well. So, given that, do you need answers to the rest of your questions at this time?

I think he’s talking about the new HVR-V1U. I’m pretty sure that DOES have actual 24p recording now.

It’s not as great in low light as the Z1U, so only consider it if you shoot things where you control the lighting.

Other than that, I can’t help you with your Final Cut questions. The camera is brand new so I don’t know anyone using it yet. I suggest asking in the HDV forum as they might have more experience with it.

Thanks, that is the one i am looking at getting. Not as good in low light huh? Interesting. I would still be interested in the FCP answers.
    thanks

Does anyone have info on how this will look after editing in 29.97fps. And does the conversion basically make shooting in 24p pointless?

    Thanks Dave,
This is a big help. I read the Ken Stone page which i had read before. It’s hard for me to grasp all this stuff until i actually use it. Like throwing a frizbee. Basically, i have been making experimental films from 16mm, super8mm and dv for a number of years. I am fine editing everything in 30fps.. i don’t imagine at this point that i’ll need the 24pA mode. This is pretty much what i want. I know there is a HDV easy set up and DV 24p easy set up but i think this is the first HDV 24p camera out there. Not sure though.

    24p Normal
When shooting in 24p Normal, the camera is adding normal standard 3:2 pulldown to the video, which results in 24p footage designed to work with any non-linear editing suite and it will play back and look good directly to any NTSC monitor. You can use 24p Normal footage just like normal video from any DV camera, and everything will work fine, but obviously, the footage will have a film look to it. If you
