    So how do Walter Murch (and others) use File Maker Pro with FCP?

    Hi Guys

    I am cutting my first feature and have been reading quite a bit about Walter Murch (editor English Paitient etc.).
    Walter and his assistant Sean, use File Maker Pro for all of their logging and I was wondering how this is done. Is there a template inside FMPro already set up for this? or is there a version (template) available on the web?

    Can someone shed any light on this situation for me please?

    Dave,

    I’ve interviewed both for Videography and the impression I have is that they have set up a custom database that they run in parallel to editing. Their use of this predates Murch cutting on FCP and I don’t think that they actually move data from FMP to FCP. It simply provides a more detailed cross-reference, including director’s comments, impressions of dailies, all the technical data, etc. I believe they put the database on their SAN system so it is accessible to all of the editors and assistants.

    Thanks for the info Oliver.

    I was leaning towards that description from what I had been reading.
    Also, from what I can tell, they use XML to transfer timecodes and clip notes from FMPro to FCP.

    If I’m correct, I’m amazed that Apple don’t hype this feature more as it could lead to more FMpro sales.
    I know that I’d much prefer my director to be logging in FMpro rather than ‘word’ as I we get all sorts of issues cropping up almost daily.
    Templates and workflow, Apple?… you listening?

    Hi
    Whilst FileMaker Pro is relative easy to use (for a mere video editor, not a database guru) to set up quite a sophisticated information database, setting it up any sort of timecode calculation fields is far from trivial.
    Even for just straightforward PAL NDF logging – before you start complicating matters with DF/NDF, and colon/semi-colon display differences….

    OK. Why is setting up a TC field difficult (I’ve never used FMpro but have seen it done in ‘word’)

    And having said that, Walter and Sean have set up these fields… has anyone else managed to get a shot logging system set-up and working properly in FMPro?

    Because FM Pro doesn’t have a simple boolean calculation scripting language – if timecode = x then y frame numbers are dropped, if not then frame count increments normally, in 30s…
    Instead FM Pro requires you to set up nested mini relational-databases to deal with each seperate if-then-else category.

    Hi, Dave – Did you ever find a good Filemaker template for editing purposes? I’m trying to build a database to log and store raw clips for future use, and need to be able to play an embedded (not referenced) quicktime file in another container field in FMP (trying to replicate the Photo or Video Clip field from the Bento Video Clips template, if you’re familiar with that.)
