  • Will This Work?—Recompression…

    Hello:

Here is a workflow i’ve been thinking of for some projects I have coming up in FCP. Most will be done at a studio location, but I may want to take some stuff home on occassion (I’m ex-AVID so please bear with me)

Some footage (prob in the 15 to 25 hour range) has been shot in HDCam. This footage is being delivered to me in anamorphic DV25 format. I will edit with this using the standard DV NTSC 48 Anamorphic timeline at another location. On the occassion that i may take this footage home, and not having a firewire drive big enough to take all the footage with me (i’m pretty sure I’ll be editing on an internal drive at the studio location), I will recompress to Offline RT as per some instructions i found on the COW and put that on the firewire drive…I’m only a little hazy on how to bring the new sequence back to my other location and have it reconnect…do I have to recompress back up, or is it a simple reconnect? What happens to the original project, do i just save that as a backup with the date and the sequence that I am bringing back becomes the working sequence? Anything I need to watch out for, subclips etc? Will there be any issues delivering the footage back to the online house…I’m assuming they will just recompress further at their end when the project is done? Any special prep work I need to do there?
Secondly, I’ve been toying with this idea for smaller more portable offline projects…get the HDcam footage in DV, further recompress to offline RT and copy the footage to my first generation 20 gig Ipod (which was a firewire drive back in the day) and use that to edit…i ran a few tests just recompressing DV footage to offline RT, copying it to the Ipod, and it seemed to work fine. I’m assuming its a 5400 RPM drive which i would guess is plenty fast enough to handle the offline media, I rendered a few effects and it seemed to work fine. Anyone heard of this before?

thanks for your patience and advice in advance!

It should work. Make sure to keep the file names the same when you recompress to the offline codec. As long as everyone is at the same FCP version, this will make relinking effortless. Avoid nesting. You will have some aspect ratio hoops to jump thru when going back to HD.

No need for recompressing to online. They should be able to relink to their footage.
