  Broadcast Safe and not going to Broadcast

  Here’s something we’ve been curious about:

  working on a project that is being scanned back to 35 and going to DVD. No broadcast for this guy. Lots of full screen, very colorful graphics – some of which are out of broadcast safe (say 90-95% saturation).

  We’re waiting to hear from our tech at the laser scanning house if these graphics are good to go for 35mm – I’m assuming they will be. But what about a DVD? I’ve made some test discs with these hot graphics and they look completely fine even over a composite cable into a cheap TV. So is “broadcast safe” really just for broadcast?

  Obviously I should play it safe and bring them all down…. But has anyone else run into this question?

  That should actually read 90-95% on a vectorscope. So very vibrant colors.

  Charly,
  the bigs problems when the signal is not Broadcast-safe are not when you get a video composite signal (Luma+ Chroma), but when you put on top of that the audio and you modulate the signal to be broadcated. In that case even the audio can sound bad when the video levels are not legal.
