  • DSR -11 deck not being recognized

Posted by Martin Sterling on January 13, 2007 at 2:39 am

I recently bought a new DSR11 deck for my fcp system. When I connected it to my setup the first tme it was recognized as a deck and was functional although during the caoture process I experenced minor problems but they worked themselves out. later on that sameday, the deck would not show up at all. I did a permissions verification and seemed to do the trick. That same problem has started again, the deck not showing up as a device. It shows up fine on my powerbook but nothing on my G5 tower. What on earth could be the problem?

Are you hooking up more than one input/output device at a time?

Say the deck and a camera…or a Kona IO/LA device or Miranda? I just got advice on this below because I was sick having to swap devices all the time thinking that I could just get a hub and plug them all in.

Walter B. informed me that FCP will only allow one input/output device at a time. You can have hard drives etc. hooked up or multiple firewire ports being used, but not by i/o devices.

    Just a thought.

I had a similar problem on my G5 DP 2GHZ a while back. CharlieX reported an issue with some sony firewire decks where if you plug/unplug the firewire cable in when everything is booted up and running you can blow the firewire bus on the G5. I had to buy a pci firewire card ($25.00) to do anything with firewire again. Here’s the thread. This should be a recall issue, firewire is supposed to be hot swap-plug and play.

    more info.

No. I have my device going directly into the firewire port.

now my DVX100A camera, which was reliable previously isn’t working either. In my hub or port. I have a feeling this has to do with the fact I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.8
I dont know what the solution is though. I reinstalled FCP 5.0 but that didnt help

    Try looking here:

This seems to be the answer to many of these kind of problems.

I’ve done all that as is outlined back in my earlier thread and gotten nowhere from it. My firewire bus is still fried but after installing a $25.00 pci card with 4 firewire ports I haven’t worried about it since. I am going to have to fix it though as my kona2 card won’t work with the pci firewire card. I have to remove it to use the kona. Basically – I plug the dsr-11 into the firewire ports at the front or back of the G5 or on the 23″ LCD monitor and get errors but I plug into the pci card and everything shows up and works like a charm. This has nothing to do with corrupt QT reciepts which I’ve trashed many times to no avail. A few others have encountered this problem too.
For $25.00 it’s worth a try Martin although I regretted not paying a little more for a card that gave me FW800 ports as well. Those are available with 2X-FW400 and 2X-FW800 in one card.
