  • Why do audio filters affect the video render files on a Mac Pro?

Posted by Mark Maness on January 12, 2007 at 3:55 pm

Ok gang, here’s a new one for you…

Why is it that when I render my sequence out and then go back to finialize my audio (using filters and level adjustments), it un-renders all of my clips that have audio filters applied to it? I don’t have this issue with a G5, just my Mac Pro (which, by the way, now has correctly paired memory installed).

Let me reiteriate… I have a clip on the timeline. I apply a color corrctor 3-way to it and apply a film effect filter to it. It now needs to be rendered to see it play in realtime. Video looks great. Now… I go back to play with the audio settings to finialize my audio. I add a few filters like a compressor and an EQ to maximize the quality for broadcast and adjust the levels. Wait a minute… what happened to my video render files? FCP is now telling me that I need to render again so that I can play my sequence in realtime.

    Has anyone noticed this behavior?

[Dave LaRonde] “Um, after you add all those audio filters, isn’t FCP telling you that it has to render the audio rather than the video?
When I add multiple audio filters, I get the same red line as I do when I have to render video.”

No… its telling me that I need to re-render my video tracks, not my audio tracks. Actually, I don’t get the red lines, but I do get the orange Unlimited RT lines, but I have to render because even my Quad 3.0 can’t play back film effects, yet. Yeah, I know… this is very strange. Yes, I have trashed my prefs.

I think you have Dynamic RT turned on. Once you add the audio filters you are reducing your overall RT capabilities, by using the processor cycles for audio effects, hence the orange line.

sorry if this is total miss-informed hogwash…

but i seem to recall reading that HDV will behave the way your;e describing, (audio fx forcing video re-render)
as the audio and video are interleaved.

    are you working with HDV?

    Hi Nick…

I think that John described it best for me. But after doing some more research about the Mac Pro, I have found out that most of my issues were related to memory issues. Come to find out that the Mac Pro’s memory requirements and FCP are very tough and since the Mac Pro is so very new, there was a problem with my memory.

If you are using a Mac Pro or plan on purchasing one in the future, PLEASE make absolutely sure that all of your memory is the same size and from the same manufacturer. And this may sound strange but memory from the same lots make all the difference in the world. In other words, if you have 2 gig of RAM in your Mac Pro and you want to upgrade it to 4 gig. You really need to replace all on the memory at the same time to keep compatibility issues with FCP. Now, I’m not absolutely positive if this will relate to purchasng Mac memory straight from Apple BUT this does apply to any third party memory manufacturer.

By the way, we are working with XDCAM HD converting it to DVCProHD for edit.
