been using fcp 5.1 (uni ver) for about a month now.. a few things that are bugging me so far.

#1 i like putting all my selects on a timeline. then i like to put that timeline in the viewer (in avid you can toggle source/record on timeline, now when i cut from sequence in viewer into my actual edit and then i match frame later on it just takes me to the selects sequence (not the original master clip) why can it only match frame one level??

#2 motion effects are annoying, seems like my options are.. applying it to the whole master clip which isnt great if i want to use parts of that clip somewhere else… or apply a motion effect to the clip on the time line and it pushes everything back (this is completly useless). so my workaround is bring clip up a few layers lock all except the one with the clip i want to timeremap then unlock and move it down.

#3 freeze frames… why cant i match frame to the original master clip that i freeze framed?

#4 dissolves.. if i have 3 clips back to back and the middle one has dissolves on both sides, i cant replace that shot with another one unless if i remove the dissolves.

#5 i seem to get underrun issues every now and then. definatly a lot more than avid. im cutting dvcpro hd footage. im using internal sata drives and media is not on system drive.

i guess thats what bugs me right now. im not anti fcp. i love how i can use the mixer while playing timeline, and that i can output to hdcam for a fraction of the cost it would cost on avid, etc etc etc… maybe i just dont know how to do what i want. let me know… thanks a lot! 🙂

What kind of answer are you looking for? The programs operate differently.

    I recommend these books:

Because FCP isn’t an Avid and it does some things differently. I can mention several things FCP does that Avid can’t do, and vise versa. I miss that to, but I work how the software works.

[cls105] “#2 motion effects are annoying, seems like my options are.. applying it to the whole master clip which isnt great if i want to use parts of that clip somewhere else…”

What are you saying here? Chopping the footage like a jigsaw puzzle? What are you trying to do?

[cls105] ” or apply a motion effect to the clip on the time line and it pushes everything back (this is completly useless).”

In the Avid you adjust the speed of the clip BEFORE you cut it into the timeline. And the Avid makes new media for that adjustment. Just do the same with FCP…adjust the speed BEFORE you cut it into the timeline. Or, create a work sequence and copy the clip, paste it into the new sequence, adjust the speed, copy and paste it back.

[cls105] “#3 freeze frames… why cant i match frame to the original master clip that i freeze framed?”

    You can’t? I can.

[cls105] “#4 dissolves.. if i have 3 clips back to back and the middle one has dissolves on both sides, i cant replace that shot with another one unless if i remove the dissolves.”

It wasn’t too long ago that the Avid worked this way too. Give it time. FCP is new and still improving the software. I miss that function too…very handy.

Are they Raid striped? I have no issue of dropped frame or underruns of any kind, and this while using G-Raids and an internal 4 drive raid.

Just remember that FCP isn’t an Avid, and they both do things the other cannot, and both require workarounds in certain situations.

try using insert/overwrite sequence contents instead. default keyboard shortcuts are cmd-f9 and cmd-f10 respectively (i prefer just to remap these to f9 and f10 so that they are the default for me)

I’d like to have a choice between matching frame to the selects sequence and the master clip but my system matches frame to the master clip. I guess you’re not cutting clips from the selects sequence but the parts of the sequence itself – nested. To cut clips from the sequence in Viewer hold Command while hitting F10 or F9. Try Command-F11 and join me in bitching to Apple it doesn’t work.

[cls105] “#2 motion effects are annoying, seems like my options are.. applying it to the whole master clip which isnt great if i want to use parts of that clip somewhere else…”

You mean time effects. Remove them in the master clip before using it in the different place. It won’t affect existing instances.

[cls105] “#3 freeze frames… why cant i match frame to the original master clip that i freeze framed?”

Because frozen frame is a separate media file. Theoretically FCP can keep track of the stills it created from video clips. File a feature request and if there are enough people asking for this feature we might get it. Like in FCP 8.

[cls105] “#4 dissolves.. if i have 3 clips back to back and the middle one has dissolves on both sides, i cant replace that shot with another one unless if i remove the dissolves.”

If there is enough footage in the new clip it works, dissolves or not. If it doesn’t on your system send detailed feedback to Apple. This is bug, not a feature.

The assumption when people ask why can’t freeze frames match back is that the freeze is of a single image, but that image could be made up of multiple tracks and even nested tracks of video and graphics. There is no logical way for the application to match back to a specific frame of that media. Because there is no media data base in FCP, there is no way for the application to know what makes up the freeze frame, hence its name, which is usually a timecode location within a sequence.

    All the best,

    Tom

#2 Watch episode 1 of our Hot Tips video podcast which deals with clip speed.

#4 You can do this with Replace edit (F11) which simply uses the position of the playheads on Viewer and Canvas to create the edit (no in/out points required). This is mentioned in ep 1 as well. If the playheads are not in sensible positions (i.e. taking into account handles required for any transitions) then the Replace edit can’t be done.

As an Avid user, you are overlooking a powerful difference between FCP and Avid….You can have more than one sequence open at a time! Keep your select sequence open, dont put it in the source monitor. Toggle to the open select sequence and match frame from there.

In FCP you can also have more than one project open…opens up some other possibilites for workflow.

Spot on Jon. That’s what I usually tell Avid editors as well.

Steven, thanks for recommending my book. 😉
